Happy New Year Volunteers of Southern Rhode Island Volunteers. New for 2024, all volunteers who serve 15 or more hours per month are eligible for a monthly giveaway of a $25 Gift Card! We know that you’re not looking for any tangible reward, we all know how wonderfully giving and caring you are! Our seniors that you help, especially know how generous you are with your time, talent and treasure!
However, you are a major part of the team that is SRIV and we want to show our appreciation in some small way. A drawing for a $25 Gift Card once a month certainly does not meet the level at which you all give, but my mom and I’m sure yours too said “it’s the thought that counts!” Any you are thought of highly not only by the senior clients, but also by the donors and staff that you represent every time you lend a helping hand.
So beginning now, for January, 2024 submit your hours by February 15, 2024 to be in the drawing for the January gift card. We won’t be telling you where—but here’s a hint, this one is for a restaurant! It’s a surprise for the winner though. We will post the winner’s first name and the location for the gift card each month on the website news page. Good luck to all our wonderful volunteers.
2024 Thank you for Last Year and Here We Go!!!!!!
Here we are at the beginning of a new year—2024. Before we step forward, let’s step back to say thank you.
Donors: without your generous support no one, no senior could have been assisted in 2023. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and we invite you to use our website, our social media pages and our events to learn more about SRIV and how your donation makes a difference in the lives of so many. We also hope you will continue to support the services provided to so many older citizens in need across the southern third of Rhode Island. So often our seniors are the forgotten population, but not by you! Thank you!
Volunteers: you are the amazing workforce that makes the difference for the individual in need. You go when called, you drive to appointments, I’ve driven to some Providence and Warwick appointments recently so I understand the commitment fully. I’ve experienced the gratitude shown by the senior in need. On behalf of all those in need of rides to medical appointments, therapies, pharmacies, town government, grocery stores and more Thank you! Thank you for the help ordering groceries online each week, not an easy task Pat and Mike know this for sure, for the drivers who pick up the groceries and deliver to the senior homes, Hilly, Mike, Nino, our Westerly students and Casey & John; for the counters of Meals on Wheels Alice, Annette, Kathy, Judy, Casey & John, you know what the coordination takes so the volunteer deliverers can get that food into the hands of those in need. For all those prepared food deliverers, Tony, Mike, Alice, Paul, The Bradley School, Peter, Joe, Jacob & Maryann, Laurie, Olivia & Sammy, Rob, Norm, Lisa, Margy, Joanne, Marcia, Brendan & Bob, Jacob & Stephanie, Ted, Mary, Linda & Zach, Terry, Madelyn & Andy, Rich, Ann, Jerry, Donna and Peg & Ed—omg you are the silent heroes we work with week in and week out! IT’S GIVING TUESDAY! Welcome
On this global Giving Tuesday, November 28, 2023, thank you for considering a donation to Southern Rhode Island Volunteers. Should you choose to donate to our grassroots nonprofit your donation will help SRIV to deliver food items from grocery stores, food pantries and meals on wheels to our homebound and frail senior neighbors across Washington County and surrounding communities. This time of year is wonderful for those of us who are celebrating with our families Thanksgiving and any one or all of the holidays that happen between Thanksgiving and New Years. For me, my family and I celebrate Christmas in December. It’s a time of great joy. It is also a time that reminds me of how blessed I am; I have a roof over my head, shelter from the weather, food on my table, heat and a somewhat comfortable bed. I’m not sure any of us really likes our mattress after a few years!
Today, I humbly ask you to consider a donation of $25 that will allow SRIV to deliver groceries to a senior in need of nutritional support or food security. On Thursday morning between 9 am and noon, SRIV will be delivering groceries to seniors in need of that service supporting their independence and nutrition. Every Thursday between those hours, SRIV delivers food to 30 senior homes.
Or, maybe you would consider a donation of $100 to help us provide transportation for 6 months for a senior who needs to see healthcare providers each month. SRIV will dispatch a volunteer to drive the senior to a medical appointment and back home again. Each day you will find SRIV team members providing transportation to 8 or more seniors. That’s at least 160 rides each month for seniors who need to access medical services but there is no public transportation in rural Washington County that makes sense for our seniors. Your donation will help SRIV to provide transportation for our seniors from Westerly to Exeter to West Greenwich to Jamestown to Charlestown to South Kingstown to North Kingstown to Narragansett to Richmond to Hope Valley to East Greenwich to Coventry and even Block Island. Your donation, no matter the amount will help SRIV to help our mature neighbors aging-in-place.
Thanks for considering SRIV with your Giving Tuesday or holiday donation this year. To donate with a credit card simply click the tab for our donations page where you will find the donate today box. Click there and you’ll go to Network for Good, a secure online donation platform.
Wishing you a wonderful holiday and family season.
It’s Fall and on its heels is Winter—Family Holidays and happenings are almost upon us—Halloween, Veteran’s Day, Diwali, Thanksgiving, Native American Heritage Day, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Years Eve and I am sure more….
This is the time of the year when many of us will gather with family and friends, loved ones from near and far. For some though, this is not a peaceful, joyful time of the year. Rather it is a time when they wonder if they will have enough money to pay for heat and food, medicine and rent and the basics. Among those who may struggle this time of the year are our senior citizen neighbors.
What can we do to help you ask (I hope!) Be aware of who your elder neighbors are. Maybe you have teens or you are able bodied and can help clean those falling leaves and twigs from their walkways to help alleviate possible hazards to falls for our seniors. Keep those walkways in mind when the snows start to fall and land on those walkways too—shovel a path to their door for them. Do these things in honor of someone who love, think how it would make you feel to know your loved one is cared for, especially if you life distances away from each other.
If you can’t take care of an elder’s walk you have many other options: Stop by and visit on occasion if you know your neighbor, volunteer with us to help a senior—so many flexible options are available. You could provide a ride to a doctor’s appointment, you could take a senior to the grocery store or local food pantry, you could deliver groceries from a local market once a week, once a month, whenever you are available as volunteer substitute. You could visit with a senior once a month, once a week, by phone, or send a note of caring. Hey college students—this would be a great opportunity for you to help someone’s gran or gramp!
Maybe you don’t have time, but you can donate to support services and the efforts of other volunteers. You can donate to SRIV and know that your dollars will make a difference for a senior isolated, in need of help to be independent, to age with dignity and to age with the helping hand they need to do the things we all take for granted!
Our seniors are a treasure of life experiences. You not only will feel a sense of accomplishment by serving someone in need, someone in your community, you will also enjoy the feeling of making a difference for someone else—there is no greater gift in life than to care more about someone else than you do about yourself, if even for just a moment in time of service. Thank you for considering service to others or financial support of service. On behalf of those seniors I am privileged to speak with each day, I thank you! Deb Tanner, Development Director at SRIV and Senior Citizen!
Thankful for our Wonderful Volunteers-Not Just during National Volunteer Month but all Year Long!
Many have long talked of the conspiracy of the greeting card. Thought to be the ploy of card companies to celebrate everything from mothers’ day to fathers’ day to birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, births, and on and on and on. BUT there is nothing wrong with celebrating the best we have to offer as humans to our world, our community, our families and beyond. So, buy your cards if you wish and celebrate everything that is good, uplifting and joyful. Send a card to a volunteer to say thank you! Now, we would like to take a moment to share some of our volunteers’ stories maybe you’ll add volunteers to your card list to celebrate another! Cards are not required, but a sincere thank you for service is always appreciated. Thanks to you for caring.
WE ARE CELEBRATING OUR SILENT HEROES—VOLUNTEERS AT SRIV AND ACROSS OUR COMMUNITIES!
Volunteers are people who actively engage in helping another, helping a cause they are passionate about and adding meaningful value to their life journey, experiences and to the journeys and experiences of others.
I have had the privilege of working with SRIV volunteers for 22 years and counting as the Executive Director and now I continue to work with our volunteers in a different role at the office and as a volunteer, myself. In my mid-60s now, I have some of those options that allow us to work fewer hours and provide us time to do some of the activities that enhance our life journey. So my activities are all about my family, husband, children, grandchildren, our horses, my kids’ dogs and extended family by enjoying time with them around great food, fun games and family time, vacations and more. My activities include art, I love to create painted wood pieces that add to a home’s welcome; most of my art is for the outdoors as I also love working in my gardens—they bring me joy and peace. But even with this full life and great times, I have some time to volunteer. I believe volunteering is what makes us all part of a collective great community—a wonderful place to call home, a place to live, to grow, to age, and to love! I invite you to join me. Why do I volunteer, it’s simple it matters not only to the other life but to mine; If you make a difference in one life other than your own along your journey then you have indeed achieved a great life success—you mattered to more than just yourself. Congrats! National Volunteer Month is April, I have purposely waiting to after May 1st to print this piece to make sure we all know that volunteering and helping is important 12 months not just one!
So as we celebrate every one of the over 400 volunteers at SRIV, here are the reasons in their own words as to why a handful of our volunteers engage to make a difference;
Mike G: For the last 30 years, I have been involved with nonprofit agencies. Many times, serving as a board member and some as a committee member. I have served in every capacity on boards; from Committee Chair to Secretary to Treasurer to Vice Chair/President to Chair/President. Some of the boards I have been on include Meals on Wheels of RI, Mentoring RI, Education Exchange, The Association of Fundraising Professionals and currently The Academic Decathlon.
I joined SRIV just over a year ago, I became the Chair of the Board of Directors recently of an incredible agency, located in Charlestown, RI, Southern Rhode Island Volunteers is all about service. This agency provides several services for the senior population of RI’s southernmost 12 cities and towns. I hope more to follow in future years.
Some of these vital services for our senior neighbors are food shopping, food delivery, transportation to and from doctor and medical offices, companionship to alleviate isolation, rolling library delivery service and more to support independent aging.
SRIV’s team is a dedicated staff of 3 incredible women, an amazingly supportive board of directors, and over 400 giving volunteers! I firmly believe the best gift to my life is the satisfaction I get from helping these agencies to complete their mission and vision. At SRIV, that is service to others that is extremely rewarding. Volunteerism can be rewarding for everyone, as long as you put the energy and effort into your actions that help you meet your service goals.
Harriet & Art: Why are we volunteers? Why do people give up their time and sometimes their money to become volunteers? There is no greater feeling of satisfaction then when one human being assists another. As retirees, we feel we need to spend our time wisely. Helping other people to stay in their homes as they age is something we understand as seniors. It’s been shown that people who help other people live healthier and happier lives. It just feels nice to do something for someone else. The people we assist as volunteers are so grateful. They tell us so and we can see it in their faces!
We also want to set a good example for our children and our grandchildren. If they see our willingness to assist others, they may find the time to do something nice for someone else. It’s important for younger people to feel an obligation to help others. We have lived much of our adult life volunteering. and we have implanted the idea that serving others as volunteers is good for the soul.
Pat: I enjoy volunteering to meet new people and to be involved in my community. I am able to use my learned skills and time to help others. Volunteering is an important opportunity to connect with people who share interests and enjoy working together on a shared project or activity. Assisting nonprofits with important work and activities allows me to gain knowledge from others while learning about other cultures. Enjoyment in trying new and different volunteer projects and the opportunities to learn something new give me a sense of accomplishment! I love the social interaction!
Tony S: It is a great honor to deliver meals on wheels through the Southern Rhode Island Volunteers program for our many seniors, some who might be housebound, have medical issues or have financial problems. The meals I deliver are very diverse and nutritious. During the delivery I get to know the seniors; friendships are developed and loneliness is eliminated. The meals on wheels of RI project accepts donations from the seniors for the food but they never refuse anyone due to cost. Southern Rhode Island Volunteers receives no compensation for this service except for those donations from community members who support SRIV. Delivering meals for the past 12 years has been a very rewarding experience and I have enjoyed my friendships with so many fine seniors.
Alesia: I spent my career in the healthcare field and believe that volunteering for non-profit organizations dedicated to helping those in need is a perfect fit in retirement. SRIV provides invaluable services to older residents in southern Rhode Island allowing them to maintain their quality of life and the dignity they deserve as they age. What better way to serve our community, knowing we will all need additional services as we age — and that organization like SRIV will only be a phone call away!
Toni T: The reason I volunteer is it gives me a sense of purpose. It makes me feel useful. Maybe it’s a selfish attitude but I enjoy meeting new people and helping out where I can.
Mike B: I volunteer so I can try to be a positive impact on the South Kingstown community. As I’ve continued to volunteer around town, I’ve learned the power that a smile and a conversation can have. It always brings a smile to my face to see the same faces each week, to check in and to chat. I’m happy to give just a little bit of my time to help the seniors around SK, and they’ve had a huge impact on me!
SRIV’S Deb Tanner honored with the Paul Harris Fellow Award by Chariho Rotary Club
Kudos to SRIV’s former Executive Director and current Development Director, Deb Tanner for being named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Chariho Rotary Club. Deb is humbled by this wonderful honor and told us that she accepts this award in honor of the hundreds of volunteers she has had the privilege to work with for just over 2 decades.
The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute to their communities in substantial ways. A $1,000 contribution in honor of the fellow is made to the Rotary Foundation. The Chariho Rotary Club has long been a champion of many causes and needs across the Chariho communities. Members of this club exemplify the Rotary motto of Service Above Self; something that the volunteers of SRIV and the members of the Chariho Rotary have in common. Thank you to the rotary for recognizing this woman that SRIV sees as our own champion, even though she’d like to be just thought of as one of the team!’
