Rhode Island Center for Assisting Those in Need

RI CAN offers emergency food, clothing and outreach to at-risk residents in Southern Rhode Island and surrounding communities. Since 2001, this nonprofit has worked to alleviate hunger and food security. In addition to its food pantry, RICAN runs its Community Shoppe thrift store as well.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Food service assistance. (two hour shift commitment - volunteer takes clients shopping inside the pantry)

  • During the less busy shifts there is stocking, date checking of donations etc. that can be done.

Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island

Since 1969, Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island is a meal delivery program to homebound seniors and adults with disabilities. MOW seeks to let seniors maintain their independence with a little help from their neighbors. SRIV works to run the South Kingstown Meals on Wheels program out of the South Kingstown Senior Center.

Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale

Since 1974, the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale has been working to eliminate hunger in Southern Rhode Island. They help local residents and families get the food, clothing, school supplies and household items they need through individual and systemic advocacy. They run a food pantry that delivers groceries to home-bound seniors and adults with disabilities in South Kingstown and Narragansett on Fridays.

Horses Bring Hope

Horses Bring Hope is a nonprofit offering both traditional and therapeutic riding lessons for people of all ages located at Smithbridge Stables in Wakefield. There are currently more than 15 horses on site ranging in age, shape and size. No prior experience is necessary, but if you'd like to volunteer with lessons, horse experience is a plus. Volunteers can interact with the horses and will learn required equestrian skills to help the nonprofit fun smoothly.
