Southern Rhode Island Volunteers’ mission is to support older citizens by providing aging-in-place services for those in need, by providing meaningful volunteer engagement opportunities, and activities that promote and enhance independent living for mature individuals including seniors, disabled adults, and anyone interested in volunteer service opportunities in their community.

SRIV’s vision is an active community of Independence realized for all!

Our purpose and commitment is to sustain and grow our volunteer members who are a major resource providing assistance through their volunteerism in our communities across the southern third (12 communities) of the State of Rhode Island. Our programs serve our elders, first and foremost, our children and families and our nonprofits and community agencies as well as all of us—our neighbors and neighborhoods! Join us today; there is always a place for you on our team!

Our flagship service programs include:

  • Independent Aging Support Services that support independent living and aging (for those 60 years of age and over).

  • Washington County Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP-55 plus years of age) Recruitment, training, support and deployment of volunteers through meaningful service opportunities assisting individuals, non-profits and our communities.

  • Community Volunteers Program (individuals 13 to 54 years of age) Recruitment, training, support and deployment of volunteers through meaningful service opportunities assisting individuals, non-profits and our communities.

  • SRIV Disaster Preparedness & Response Team SRIV volunteers 13 plus years of age helping during community disasters, crisis and other needs as determined by local emergency management directors.

SRIV’s team collaborates with many community service and nonprofit organizations addressing the needs of individual neighbors and our larger communities with concerns ranging from helping our senior citizens with independence and aging assistance, to food security, to access/transportation to healthcare providers, to affordable housing, to cultural history, to environmental concerns, to animal well-being and more. A helping hand for one individual has far reaching affects for that person and many others across entire communities. Working to make your home community the best it can be, even offers many benefits to you and I the volunteers engaged.

SRIV offers opportunities for our members to use their skills, talents and time to benefit individuals in need and to benefit the greater community. Whether you are a retiree with extra time on your hands, a student looking to fulfill community service hours, a mom or dad with mid-day hours, or an individual or group interested in being involved, SRIV has an opportunity for you!  Volunteerism is as flexible as you need it to be at SRIV, we will work with you to help you make a meaningful choice for your service goals. Can you just imagine what we can do together to make life all it can be in our hometowns and for our neighbors? We sincerely hope you will join our amazing team of volunteers; there is a seat on our team waiting just for you! Join us today!

CRITICAL NEED: Transportation to and from: medical appointments

  • dentists

  • therapies

  • pharmacies

This is a very flexible opportunity. You can choose the geographic communities/area you wish to serve, days, times—there’s no schedule.

When a need arises, you’d get an email first with a list of needs to choose 1 or a couple that you’d like to help with. If time is getting close, you’d receive a call based on your preferences and if you’re available, great-if not, we’ll call you another time.

Delivery of groceries once a week is another way to help a homebound senior. Thursday mornings is delivery day from some major markets when our volunteers deliver to 2 to 4 senior homes their weekly groceries; other times include individual pick-ups and deliveries which work the same way as medical transportation scheduling does. We could use some volunteers willing to sub for this opportunity when regularly scheduled volunteers have to be out.

Southern RI Volunteers has opportunities for volunteers on our committees too!. We welcome enthusiastic and fun folks to join our development team. Members on this team are engaged in tasks that interest them. That could mean they help to plan or execute events, they help to plan marketing and outreach, education opportunities for individuals to learn about SRIV’s services and opportunities. Our team meets by zoom currently the meeting is the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30 pm for 1 hour to discuss, develop and work one of two annual SRIV events, summer community events, SRIV outreach and ways to share SRIV’s mission, volunteer and client stories to educate our neighbors across our southernmost 12 communities in RI.

Join our dedicated and fun Development & Marketing committee—to learn more, contact Deb at SRIV. Leave your name and number at 401-552-7661 or email info@southernrivol.org.

We also welcome individuals to our finance and operations committee. Our finance volunteers oversee monthly financial reporting, our operations volunteers consider services offered, other services that may be a good fit for SRIV and community needs. Our Finance & Operations committee meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month by zoom at 5:30 pm for approximately 1 1/2 hours. To learn more, contact Lindsay at SRIV. Leave your name and number at 401-552-7661 or email info@southernrivol.org.

Meals on Wheels How about being a volunteer “sub”. Be on our call list to see if you might occasionally be available to deliver meals on wheels in the South Kingstown, Narragansett and Exeter areas. This is only an occasional opportunity or a sub opportunity for a regular volunteer who is away for any length of time.

SRIV also recruits volunteers for the Charlestown RI meals on wheels route. At this time, Charlestown is all set. SRIV also partners with Meals on Wheels of RI for the routes in Richmond, Hopkinton and Westerly. Subs are always in need.

RICAN food pantry is looking for volunteers to help in the thrift shop. There is a need especially on Tuesday and Saturday at this time.

Hoping to met you soon and welcome you to the team.

SRIV can be reached at 401-552-7661 Monday through Friday between 9 am and 4 pm or by email at info@southernrivol.org.
