The center was founded in 1773 by a group of Wakefield women to provide assistance to families with children and the elderly living on a fixed income. It operates a resale shop stocked with high-quality clothing and household goods, all at very low prices. Assistance includes food baskets, fresh bread and milk program for families, a summer lunch program for school children, free toys for needy children at Christmas and free clothing and household items for the needy.
