What is SHO? SHO, founded in 1980 as Seniors Helping Others, is the volunteer resource for southern Rhode Island, a nonprofit organization of volunteers throughout Washington County and Jamestown. We match volunteer skills with individual and agency needs, giving special attention to finding appropriate placements for mature volunteers. Our organization is part of the nationwide network of Retired and Senior Volunteer Programs (RSVP). | What is its purpose? To encourage the spirit of volunteerism, especially among older adults, and to provide programs designed to meet the needs of people of all ages in Washington County and Jamestown. SHO helps senior volunteers stay physically and mentally active, enabling them to remain in the mainstream of community life. Our volunteers add value to the lives of others while adding value to their own lives. | Who volunteers for SHO? People of many walks of life throughout the region who are 12 years or older. Currently, more than 700 volunteers are giving their time and talent in dozens of locations throughout our area. These community partners include schools, medical facilities, museums, churches, chambers of commerce, senior centers and many other types of organizations. | Who pays for SHO? SHO is funded by the Department of Elderly Affairs, the Corporation for National Service, grants from municipalities, local companies and civic organizations, along with individual contributions. It is United Way Agency #8150. |
